 | | | | Extended School Year (ESY) and Summer School
Summer school refers to regular education opportunities that individual school buildings offer to all children who attend that school - if budgets allow.
Extended School Year (ESY) refers to Special Education service needed outside of the regular school year to help qualifying students reach the goals in their Individual Education Plans (IEP). Typically these services are needed over the summer months.
The purpose of ESY services is to prevent a greater loss of skills than the child can reasonably regain when school starts again in the fall, or to maintain skills that are critical for a child’s independence. Services are usually focused on specific goal(s) in a child’s plan (IEP), not the plan as a whole
If your child will be three or older by June 9, 2005, you and your child’s team will be making a decision in the next few months about the need for Extended School Year (ESY) services over the summer. Children under three receive their usual Special Education service during the six weeks of summer school so ESY does not apply to this age group.
Start now to talk with your child’s teacher about collecting data that will help the team to make this important decision.
